The field of sociology will not transform for the better from the top; sociology’s character will not shift for the good because of internal revolution within mainstream sociology, nor through the ideas and efforts of professional sociology. Instead, as in the past, contemporary sociology’s transformation into a more critical, public, and social justice orientated discipline will most likely develop at the hands of the countersystem sociologists working with and for socially oppressed groups, those scientists who are often marginalized by professional sociology.
